Personally, I (formerly known as Lisa Price aka Kitty Price) had a somewhat unusual experience, I was in the ninth grade about 1964/1965, and it was my first time boarding away from home... The Housemother selected me to be placed in an "experimental compound" room as I recall them naming it, and there I had 5 roommates, Marta Hall (later her married name was Marta Hall Martinez I believe), Shirley Smith, Heidi (Glasson?), Sam(antha? forgot her last name), and Diana (forgot her last name too). My memories are fading here, sorry friends, if I can't remember your last names today, maybe it will come back to me tomorrow... We had a little study room in the front and our sets of bunk beds, and two showers and lavatories with a storage shelf above the johns. I'll never forget hiding out in that storage place there the night of my first mandatory attendance dance. I had a lovely silver dress and an ostrich feather wrap, and pretty silver shoes but was too afraid to go, til it was almost over, when I got the nerve and came down from the storage shelf, and went. I hope to add more of my experiences as time goes on, and its always inspirational to me, when I hear from others about their Howey Academy memories. No, I'm not sure what exactly caused it to close, but I was told the facility was taken over as a home for wayward girls or something like that, and I heard the gynmasium was used as an expendable prop and blown up for a movie stunt - probably in the 70s, it would be nice to know what movie that was, and to see it.

So tell me about your memories... I'd love to hear them... and maybe post them on Howey site if you don't mind...

Not a bit The headmaster sticks in my mind and riding through the orange
groves on horseback. (last school I ever went to that had equestrian
classes)
The last year I was there ... was when hurricane Dora (wierd
one ... actually had two eyes) when smack through the town ... I'll dig
up my yearbook if you like and scan some of the shots in it. I've got
one on the computer now so I'll tag it on the bottom of this.

 

I left there, went over to public school on Merritt Island (while my
parents were still together the old man was at the Cape.) and then ended
up back up here in Annapolis for a few years (Wroxeter-on-the-Severn,
then Severn School) and then when my mother died ... I ended up back in
public school - snicker - at (of all things) Parris Island (Beaufort,
SC) to graduate, and then back up to Annapolis to go to U. Maryland.

Your husband did the website? Darn nice job.  I piddle around with
photography but mostly I do carvings (engravings) in wood (Alice through
the looking Glass, Lord of the Rings, etc.) ... and my best girl friend
(my wife) helps me  raise my English cider apples. Two acres of esoteric
trees and such.  I've been a contractor for the Intel Community for a
long time (NSA) mostly but ... heart attack 8 years ago, and some
lingering unresolved issues that John's Hopkin's can't figure out so I'm
semi retired.

Hi my name is toni I was in the class of 77. Howey closed because CV Griffin did not want Blacks in and so florida cut off his funding. it became Disto a rehad for rich kids but the town ran them out. Hulk Hogan blow up the girls dorm for his show thunder in Pardise . that was in in 1990. the whole school was used to shoot that segment it was really fun to watch. hope this helps   toni Barabas  class 77
